The Marriott Hotel Is Reworking Its Restaurant—and Putting the Rooftop to Use

A new management team says it wants the downtown hotel to feel more connected to Tacoma—not just like a place to sleep during a convention. The plans start with a reworked restaurant and lounge designed as a more welcoming “living room” for hotel guests, convention visitors, and locals.
The team is also considering a grab-and-go coffee shop and ways to activate the rooftop for gatherings and pop-up events. The concepts are still taking shape, and the hotel has not estimated the cost. Here’s what the management company says it hopes to change—and when.

Meet the Muralist Who Turned Tacoma Walls Into Neighborhood Landmarks

Muralist Mary Mann
Mary Mann’s murals have become familiar landmarks across Tacoma and Pierce County—from Indigenous mermaids at the Antique Sandwich Company to scenes celebrating local neighborhoods and history. A News Tribune profile follows the Tacoma-raised artist as she paints an early winter scene on the restaurant’s windows and reflects on how public art becomes part of a place.
Mann has painted large-scale murals in Tacoma since 1995, and her work keeps evolving: she now uses digital design tools and recently tried projecting a mural onto a wall with a virtual-reality headset. Read on for a look at some of the works you may recognize—and what keeps people stopping to talk while she paints.

Tacoma’s Measure 1: What It Would Change—and Who’s Funding the Debate

Tacoma voters will decide Nov. 3 whether Measure 1 should give the city new tools to investigate credible rental safety complaints and penalize violations. The proposal also includes rental licensing, a public landlord database and a way to return some penalties to affected tenants.
The debate has drawn campaign money and advocacy from beyond Tacoma. A News Tribune report details a $175,000 contribution from a Seattle-based real estate firm to a PAC opposing the measure, as well as support for the measure at a Seattle fundraiser. Here’s what the proposal would do—and what Tacoma voters may want to know about the people and interests shaping the debate.
