Expressing Your Success: Local Author Brings Story of Injustice and Enduring Love to Print
Tacoma-area author Maribeth Slovasky, founder of Expressing Your Success, is bringing an extraordinary true story to print with Paradise to Prison: A True-Life Tragedy in Acapulco. The memoir follows John Petersen, a Tacoma man who was falsely accused, imprisoned for six months in Acapulco in the 1990s and eventually deported back to the United States, leaving behind nearly $1 million in assets — and the woman he loved. Slovasky spent roughly 20 hours interviewing Petersen and years developing the relationship and story that became the book.
What began as a story about injustice ultimately became something much more personal: a story of enduring love, loss and survival. Slovasky says sharing his experience has also helped Petersen continue to heal from what happened decades ago. The book launches Friday, August 28, in paperback and digital formats, with an audiobook planned for this fall. Slovasky is already looking ahead for the next compelling true story she can help bring to readers.

Point Defiance Zoo’s Last Polar Bear Is Leaving Tacoma
Laerke
Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s only remaining polar bear is leaving Tacoma. Five-year-old Laerke is expected to move to an accredited zoo in the Midwest this fall, where she’ll be paired with a potential mate as part of a nationwide effort to maintain a healthy and genetically diverse polar bear population.
Laerke arrived at Point Defiance with her twin sister, Astra, in 2023, but Astra left last year under a separate breeding recommendation. Once Laerke leaves, the zoo says it has no immediate plans to bring in another polar bear — raising the possibility that Tacoma could be without one of Point Defiance’s signature animals for some time.

Thursday' Night’s Full Moon Will Nearly Disappear Over Tacoma
Tacoma sky watchers are in for a show Thursday night as a near-total lunar eclipse covers as much as 96% of the full moon. The eclipse runs from about 7:35 p.m. Thursday to 12:01 a.m. Friday, with the best viewing coming after sunset and the eclipse reaching its maximum at approximately 9:12 p.m.
The moon should darken and take on a reddish-orange hue as it moves through Earth's shadow. Best of all, there's nothing special you need to see it — lunar eclipses are completely safe to watch with the naked eye, although getting away from Tacoma's brightest city lights should improve the view

Need Legal Help? Free Advice Is Available This Afternoon
Tacoma residents looking for legal help can stop by the Moore Branch of Tacoma Public Library Thursday for a free legal aid pop-up. The drop-in event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 27 at the library, 215 S. 56th St.
The program gives residents an opportunity to connect with legal assistance and resources in a neighborhood library setting without the cost that can make seeking legal help intimidating. No legal problem? Moore is also offering free Tech Help from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday.
