Expressing Your Success: Local Author Brings Story of Injustice and Enduring Love to Print

Some stories are too powerful to remain untold. For Maribeth Slovasky, founder of Expressing Your Success, the journey of bringing one man's extraordinary experience to the page has been both a professional milestone and a deeply human endeavor.

Her upcoming memoir, set to launch on August 28th, tells the gripping story of John, a Tacoma man who was wrongly accused of crimes, imprisoned in Acapulco during the 1990s, and ultimately forced to leave behind both a fortune and the love of his life.

Slovasky, a writer and published author, first connected with John through an unexpected source: a networking group and John's physical therapist, Kelsey, who makes several appearances in the book. What began as an introduction evolved into hours of interviews and years of relationship-building. "We spent hours talking. I interviewed him probably for about 20 hours, all told, asking specific questions," Slovasky explains.

The memoir details John's harrowing six-month imprisonment in an Acapulco prison on false charges. Upon his release, he was deported back to the United States, forced to abandon his wife and nearly a million dollars in assets. He returned to Tacoma empty-handed, carrying only memories of the life he had built and lost. Yet through years of conversation and collaboration, Slovasky discovered layers to the story that transcended the injustice. "The more that we get to know each other, the more his story unfolded from a, 'Oh my God, look what happened,' to a love story. He found his true love in Acapulco and had to leave her behind, and that just fascinated me," she says.

The personal cost of John's ordeal remains with him 25 years later. But Slovasky believes the act of storytelling itself has become part of his healing process. "I think that he was able to heal even more because he was finally able to tell his story and hopefully share it with the world," she reflects.

As the book launch approaches, Slovasky is focused on building awareness through social media and local publicity efforts. She hopes readers will not only engage with John's incredible story but also connect with the emotional truth at its heart: a man who survived injustice, loss, and separation, yet continues to carry love across decades and distance. "For the rest of his life, he's gonna love her and come to terms with not having her," Slovasky says.

Looking beyond the August 28th launch, Slovasky is already searching for her next project. "Personally, I'm always looking for my next story to tell, and so I'm looking for another, hopefully another really good story like this one to write," she shares. For now, her focus remains on John and ensuring his story reaches the audience it deserves.

The memoir will be available in both paperback and digital formats beginning August 28th, with an audiobook version set to follow this fall.
