Grief Exhibition - Tacoma Local Minute

Grief does not always arrive in words. Sometimes it appears in a photograph, a piece of fabric, a painted surface or an object that suddenly carries more meaning than it once did.

What Remains, a new group exhibition coming to downtown Tacoma, will explore life, death, grief and the things that endure after loss. The show opens Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. on the second floor of TygerWolf Tattoo at 539 Broadway.

Lead artist Jordi B is joined by more than a dozen local artists working across painting, photography, textiles, mixed media and printmaking. Rather than offering one definition of grief, the exhibition brings together different materials and perspectives on what people carry with them—and what they eventually leave behind.

The opening reception will expand beyond visual art with a Grief Writing Experience led by Tacoma writer and educator Sarah A. Chavez. Visitors will be invited to sit with their own memories and translate some of what they carry into words.

The setting adds another layer to the event. TygerWolf is primarily known as a tattoo studio, where personal stories and memories are routinely turned into permanent images. Its second floor is now creating room for exhibitions, drawing events and other forms of community art.

What Remains will remain on view through Dec. 1. The opening is supported by the City of Tacoma’s Tacoma Artists Initiative Program.
