Tacoma's Soundview Little League finally ran into a roadblock Sunday morning at the Little League World Series — but its remarkable run in Williamsport isn't over yet.
Soundview, representing the Northwest Region, fell 5-0 to Mountain Region champion Paseo Verde Little League of Henderson, Nevada, suffering its first loss of the World Series after opening the tournament with two straight victories.
For most of the morning, the game was considerably closer than the final score suggests.
The teams battled through four scoreless innings, and Soundview went down in the top of the fifth with the game still tied 0-0. Nevada then broke through in the bottom half of the inning, scoring all five of its runs to take control.
Soundview's offense never found its rhythm against Nevada pitching. Tacoma finished with just two hits, while Nevada collected 11. Soundview also committed three errors, making it difficult to contain Nevada once the fifth-inning rally began.
The loss follows an impressive start to Soundview's first trip through the Williamsport bracket. Tacoma opened the World Series with a dramatic 2-0 extra-inning victory over Alabama and followed that with a 4-3 win over Texas on Friday.
Those two victories matter now. Because the Little League World Series uses a double-elimination format, Sunday's defeat doesn't send Soundview home. Instead, Tacoma drops into the elimination side of the U.S. bracket.
Soundview will play again Tuesday, Aug. 25 at noon Pacific time at Howard J. Lamade Stadium. Its opponent will be determined Monday when Southeast Region champion Phenix City, Alabama, faces Mid-Atlantic Region champion West Chester, Pennsylvania. Soundview will play the winner of that game.
From here on out, though, there's no margin for error. A second loss would end Soundview's World Series run, while a win Tuesday would keep Tacoma alive and send the team deeper into the elimination bracket.
For Tacoma fans following from home, Tuesday's game will be televised nationally on ESPN. It can also be watched through the ESPN App with an applicable subscription.
Soundview may no longer be unbeaten, but Tacoma's Little Leaguers are still playing baseball in Williamsport — and on Tuesday they'll have a chance to extend their World Series run.
