Tacoma residents will have 14 different opportunities to give the city a little attention on Saturday, September 19—all during the same two-hour window.
The City of Tacoma’s Tidy-Up Tacoma program is partnering with volunteer organizations Litter Free 253 and Oscar’s Enemies for a citywide cleanup from 10 a.m. to noon. Residents can select whichever participating location is most convenient for them.
Every site will be staffed, and organizers will provide bags, gloves and litter-picking equipment. No previous cleanup experience is needed, and volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome.
The largest effort will take place downtown near Commerce Street and Pacific Avenue. City crews and volunteers will concentrate on the area around South 24th and South 25th streets, where the work will extend beyond picking up litter. Plans also include removing graffiti and installing additional public trash cans.
The remaining 13 locations will give residents across Tacoma a chance to work closer to home. The collaboration brings together City resources and two community-led organizations that already conduct cleanup projects around Tacoma throughout the year.
Beyond making streets and public spaces look better, organizers see neighborhood cleanups as an opportunity for residents to meet one another and build a greater sense of ownership in their communities.
Advance registration is strongly encouraged. Volunteers can select their preferred cleanup location when signing up, which also helps organizers ensure that each site has enough supplies.
