At Owen Beach, the Kitchen Comes With a View

Daniel Ferreira (Image courtesy of Daniel Ferreira)
At Owen Beach, Daniel Ferreira set up a camp stove and cutting board to make smoked salmon mac and cheese, with kayakers and seals in the background. His Instagram account, @cookingaroundthesound, has nearly 60,000 followers with short videos of Pacific Northwest-inspired meals made on beaches and sometimes from a kayak.
The finished clips may be only a minute long, but filming them takes patience—and sometimes a lot goes wrong. Follow Ferreira from his Florida beginnings to the shoreline kitchen he’s built here, including the Tacoma stops that inspired his growing audience. Read on for a look behind the scenes—and the story of one shoot that went badly off course.

Four Days, 20-Plus Countries and a Tacoma Film Festival Milestone

The Tacoma Film Festival opens this Thursday for its 20th year, bringing films from more than 20 countries to Tacoma. The opening-night documentary, Time Warp, follows a group in rural Wyoming trying to stage the town’s first Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow cast. Director Allison Berg is scheduled to join a post-film Q&A.
Opening night also includes a party at The Poet, with Tacoma’s Blue Mousketeers scheduled to perform. The four-day festival continues with a music-video showcase featuring local bands, a closing-night film and several public events. Here’s what’s on the schedule—and what to know about ticket options.

The number of detections created an unusual wrinkle as the cameras moved from warnings to citations: the vendor can process only a limited number of tickets each day. Here’s how Tacoma is deciding which eligible vehicle owners receive them—and what the early data shows about speeds on the corridor.
