The Woman Rebuilding Tacoma Arts Live Wants to Meet Tacoma

Katie Stricker, CEO, Tacoma Arts Live

Tacoma Arts Live was preparing to close its doors this summer while carrying approximately $3 million in debt. Instead, the 47-year-old nonprofit entered receivership and named longtime staff member Katie Stricker as CEO, with a leaner future centered on arts education and making the Tacoma Armory a more active community gathering place.

From 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, September 17, Stricker will host a free Coffee with the CEO gathering at the Armory. With no formal agenda, residents can ask questions, tour the building and share what they want to see from Tacoma Arts Live—offering Tacomans a rare opportunity to help influence what the organization becomes next.

Could Tacoma Help Build Batteries From Captured Carbon?

Tacoma-based Homeostasis Systems has received a $303,518 National Science Foundation grant to advance an unusual technology: converting captured industrial carbon dioxide into graphite suitable for lithium-ion batteries. The company is not manufacturing batteries; it is developing the graphite used in their anodes. The yearlong research project will test whether its electrochemical process can produce material pure and consistent enough to replace conventional battery-grade graphite.

Homeostasis operates a development facility at the Port of Tacoma and envisions using small, modular reactors near industrial emission sources. If the technology proves commercially viable, it could address two problems simultaneously—finding a productive use for unwanted carbon dioxide and reducing America’s dependence on imported graphite. The federal grant is for early-stage research, however, so affordable large-scale production has not yet been demonstrated.

Hot Rods & Hot Dogs at Cheney Stadium Today

Two kinds of horsepower will share Cheney Stadium today when the Rainiers host their Hot Dogs & Hot Rods car show before Tacoma’s final home baseball game of the season. The show begins at 10 a.m., and awards will be presented starting at 11:45. Spectators can view the cars for free, although parking costs $10, must be paid by card and covers the entire day.

The Rainiers will face the El Paso Chihuahuas at 1:35 p.m. A $44.92 event package includes a reserved seat, premium concessions meal and commemorative T-shirt, but visitors do not need a game ticket to attend the morning car show.
