Tacoma Is Hiring 12 New Police Officers — But There’s a Catch
Tacoma is preparing to add 12 new police officers after receiving a $4.6 million state grant. The money will also pay for three support employees and a contract psychologist, while the city is putting additional local money toward vehicles, equipment and startup costs.
There’s one big catch: the state funding is temporary. It currently runs only through next June, with the possibility of one additional year. After that, Tacoma will have to figure out how to keep paying for the new positions — at a time when the city is already wrestling with its own budget problems.

A Beloved South Tacoma Bakery Has Closed — But It May Not Be Gone for Good
A longtime South Tacoma bakery known for churros, conchas, custom cakes and a wide selection of vegan and gluten-free treats has closed its storefront. Pasteles Finos del Angel, which had operated at 5102 S. Washington St. since 2018, shut its doors Aug. 21 after the building’s owners moved to sell the property.
But this may not be the end. Owner Miguel Hernandez told customers to “stay tuned for our next location,” suggesting the bakery could reopen elsewhere. For now, there’s no new address or reopening date — but fans of the shop may still have more churros and conchas in their future.

Wondering Why Tacoma’s Flags Are at Half-Staff? Here’s the Reason
If you've noticed flags flying at half-staff around Tacoma, they're lowered in memory of country music legend Dolly Parton, who died Tuesday at age 80. President Donald Trump ordered flags lowered at federal facilities, and Gov. Bob Ferguson followed with a directive for Washington state agencies. They'll remain lowered through sunset Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Parton also leaves behind a surprisingly significant legacy in Washington: her Imagination Library, which mails free books to young children every month, now reaches more than 120,000 kids across the state. The program has recently faced state funding cuts, and Washington's superintendent is pushing lawmakers to restore its support.
