A Beloved South Tacoma Bakery Has Closed — But It May Not Be Gone for Good

A South Tacoma bakery known for churros, conchas, elaborate cakes and an unusually broad selection of vegan and gluten-free treats has closed its storefront after roughly eight years.

Pasteles Finos del Angel shut the doors at 5102 S. Washington St. on Aug. 21, ending its run in the mint-green South Tacoma storefront where owner and baker Miguel Hernandez had operated since 2018.

But fans of the bakery may not have seen the last of it.

Before closing, Hernandez told customers on social media to “stay tuned for our next location,” suggesting the business could eventually reopen elsewhere.

According to Hernandez, the owners of the South Washington Street property are preparing to sell the building.

He said he was notified earlier this year and was later asked to leave so the sale could move forward. That resulted in a short “moving out” sale Aug. 19–21 before the storefront closed.

So this appears to be less of a farewell to the bakery itself and more of a forced end to this particular location.

That distinction matters for a business that had developed a loyal following in South Tacoma.

Pasteles Finos del Angel built its identity around an unusually wide mix of Mexican, European and American pastries.

The bakery’s menu included churros, conchas, flan, tiramisu, fruit tarts, donuts, cupcakes, Napoleon cake, Black Forest cake, red velvet cake, cheesecake, Rosca de Reyes, Mardi Gras cake and Peruvian alfajores, among many other sweets.

Hernandez also offered numerous vegan and gluten-free options, something that helped distinguish the shop from more traditional bakeries.

Even customers with dietary restrictions could often find versions of donuts, cupcakes, pies and cakes designed for them.

The bakery also specialized in custom cakes for birthdays, weddings and other celebrations.

The business dates its South Tacoma operation to 2018, according to its website.

Over those years, the storefront at 5102 S. Washington St. became familiar to customers looking for both everyday pastries and elaborate special-order desserts.

The shop wasn’t especially flashy from the outside, but inside was a menu that ranged from classic Mexican sweet breads to French-inspired pastries and raw vegan desserts.

That eclectic mix was part of its personality.

And judging from Hernandez’s message to customers, he isn’t ready to let that disappear.

For now, that part remains unclear.

Hernandez has not publicly announced a new address or reopening date.

His existing website still lists the South Washington Street address and the bakery’s previous operating hours, so customers should not rely on that information until a new location is confirmed.

But his message about a future location leaves open the possibility that Pasteles Finos del Angel will return somewhere else in Tacoma.

For longtime customers, that makes this closure a little different from the growing list of local businesses that simply disappear.

The South Tacoma storefront is gone.

The bakery itself may not be.
