Downtown Tacoma Is Becoming a Giant Puzzle Course This Saturday

Downtown Tacoma will become one enormous puzzle course this Saturday when the Tacoma Puzzle Hunt returns for its third year.

The free competition begins at Theater Square, 917 Broadway, and runs from noon to 4:30 p.m. on September 26. Participants will team up to tackle a collection of puzzles and challenges spread through the surrounding downtown area.

The experience falls somewhere between a scavenger hunt, an outdoor escape room and a walking tour—except teams will need more than sharp eyes to reach the finish. Successful players will have to decipher clues, recognize patterns and combine information gathered along the route.

Organizers describe the event as a puzzle-filled adventure rather than a race based purely on speed. That gives teams an incentive to bring together people who approach problems differently, whether they are good with words, numbers, observation or unconventional thinking.

There is also something substantial waiting at the end. The team that finishes on top will receive a $500 grand prize, with additional prizes promoted as part of the event.

The Tacoma Puzzle Hunt is produced by the Outdoor Discovery Project, a nonprofit organization focused on creating opportunities for people to explore and interact with the places around them. The event has also received support and promotion through Tacoma Creates and Tacoma Venues & Events.

No specialized puzzle-solving experience is required. The hunt is designed as a community activity, so newcomers can participate alongside experienced escape-room fans and people who simply want an unusual way to spend an afternoon downtown.

Participation is free, but advance registration is required. Players should expect to spend several hours walking outdoors and will want comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing and a fully charged phone.
