Comal En Brasa - Tacoma Local Minute

Tacoma’s West End has a new Salvadoran restaurant worth putting on your dining radar. Comal en Brasa opened in late August at 6409 Sixth Avenue, Suite 14, near Fuego Nightclub. According to The News Tribune’s Kristine Sherred, the casual restaurant comes from Fuego owners Jose and Sonia Paulino, whose latest venture gives their cooking a space of its own.

Pupusas are a natural starting point. These stuffed, griddled rounds come with several filling combinations, including cheese and beans, cheese and zucchini, and revuelta, which combines pork, beans and cheese. The restaurant also lists a build-your-own pupusa, giving diners room to mix things up rather than stick to a standard combination.

The menu reaches further into Salvadoran cooking with chicken tamales, yuca with chicharron and a plato tipico for anyone who would rather sample several things. Mexican dishes share the menu, including tacos, enchiladas and quesabirria. Horchata, tamarind and jamaica drinks round out the options, making this a place where different appetites can find something at the same table.

The setup is straightforward: order at the counter, and staff bring the food to your table. Published hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, with Friday and Saturday service extending until 2 a.m. The ordering page lists a separate late-night menu, so check what’s available if you’re planning a visit after the dinner hour.

There’s more behind the opening than simply adding another restaurant to Sixth Avenue. Sherred’s reporting traces the owners’ decision to bring a dedicated kitchen back to the shopping plaza and takes a closer look at the food.
