Wren's Nest Baking Co - Tacoma Local Minute

Some bakery visits end uneventfully with a quick trip back to the car. Wren’s Nest Baking Co. offers a reason to stay awhile. Located inside the Ruston Carriage House at 5121 N. Pearl Street, the bakery has coffee, reclaimed wood walls and seating near a fireplace. It’s a setting that lends itself to taking a break on the way to—or from—Point Defiance.

The bakery’s entirely gluten-free approach grew from a practical family need. Owner Laureen Skrivan was inspired by relatives who struggled to find desserts they could enjoy. According to the bakery’s website, its dedicated gluten-free facility is intended to give those customers more choices while welcoming people without dietary restrictions, too. Breads, cakes and cookies are part of that broader ambition.

In her recent Weekly Volcano feature, Jackie Fender explores both sides of the display case, from savory kolaches and empanadas to macarons and other sweets. Quiche is her recurring favorite, although choosing a filling proves harder than choosing the category. Her account offers a visitor’s perspective on the food and atmosphere, with specific recommendations for anyone wondering where to begin.

Wren’s Nest currently lists its hours as Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is closed Sundays—so save this one for another day if you’re reading with your Sunday coffee. Before you go, read Fender’s full Weekly Volcano feature for the quiche combinations and sweet treats that made narrowing her order such a challenge.
