A horror movie, a glassmaking hot shop and a conversation about local lore are coming together at the Museum of Glass. On Friday, October 23, the museum will screen The Ring inside its Hot Shop as part of its free “Movies in the Cone” series.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the film starting at 6 p.m. Afterward, University of Washington Tacoma Teaching Professor Jennifer Myers Baran will lead a discussion. Museum staff member Linnea Thorpe will also talk about true crime and paranormal history around the region.
The screening is part of this year’s series, “Women, Myth, and Media.” The museum says the program looks at how women and cultural outsiders confront—and reshape—the stories and systems that try to define them. That theme connects The Ring with the series’ other films, including Bend It Like Beckham, Frida and Galaxy Quest.
There’s a local flavor to the evening, too: Sliced Sandwiches will offer food and drinks until 6 p.m., and concessions will be available in the Grand Hall. The movie is free, but the museum asks guests to RSVP.
The galleries are currently closed during a renovation, while the Hot Shop and other museum spaces remain open. For this event, that means the museum’s signature glassmaking space becomes the setting for a night of film and discussion. See the event details and RSVP on the Museum of Glass website here.
