Two new speed cameras in Tacoma are reaching the end of their warning period. The cameras went live Sept. 14, and the city says new locations get 30 days of warnings before violations can result in citations. Based on that schedule, the warning period is expected to end around Oct. 14. The city’s camera program page says violations after the warning period are subject to a $145 civil infraction.
The cameras cover uphill traffic on Norpoint Way NE and southbound traffic on SR-509/Marine View Drive. The city selected these corridors because of speeding and serious-crash concerns. Drivers should watch for the posted signs marking camera-enforcement areas.
A camera citation is handled as a civil infraction. Under Tacoma code, it does not become part of the registered owner’s driving record. Recipients can respond by mail or request a hearing.
These are the first two cameras in a larger expansion. The city says six more are planned to begin operating in phases starting in January 2027: two on South Sprague Avenue, two on Pacific Avenue and two on Portland Avenue.
For a map of the camera locations and details on how the program works, drivers can check the city’s automated enforcement page.
