Pierce County Deputies Try Goat Language During Unusual Chase

Pierce County deputies handled a different kind of pursuit this week — one with hooves.

On June 29 around 4:30 p.m., deputies and Animal Control responded near 122nd Street South and Park Avenue South, close to Pacific Lutheran University, after reports of a loose goat weaving in and out of traffic. What followed was a 20-minute neighborhood chase involving deputies, Animal Control, and one very determined four-legged suspect.

At one point, a deputy reportedly tried speaking what he believed was “goat language” in an effort to calm the runaway. The goat, apparently unimpressed by the officer’s linguistic skills, continued the escape attempt. Eventually, deputies and Animal Control cornered the goat and safely took it into custody.

The adventurous animal was taken to a local rescue farm, where it will be cared for while Animal Control works to find its owner. Anyone missing a goat is asked to contact Pierce County Animal Control at (253) 798-7387. Thankfully, the only injuries reported appear to be a few tired deputies and possibly one bruised ego in the goat-translation department.

Five Artists Will Live Paint at Downtown Tacoma Block Party

Past Mural Fest creations.

Feeling artistic? Want to promote your art?

Spaceworks Tacoma will select five artists to live paint during the Downtown Tacoma Block Party on August 2, 2026. Each selected artist will create work on a provided 4-foot by 8-foot plywood panel, giving festival visitors a chance to watch the mural-making process happen in real time.

The opportunity is open to Pierce County artists, and applications are due by Wednesday, July 15, at 11:59 p.m. The event is supported in part by Tacoma Creates funding and continues Spaceworks Tacoma’s work of connecting local artists with public-facing creative opportunities.

Artists interested in participating can apply through the Spaceworks submission page. For everyone else, Mural Fest will be another reason to check out the Downtown Tacoma Block Party and see local creativity on display.

Fresh Bowls, Smoothies, and Toasts Arrive on Market Street

Downtown Tacoma has a new spot for a fresh bite.

Eternal Soul Bowl is now open at 767 Market Street, bringing made-to-order açaí bowls, smoothies, and toast creations to the Rialto Blocks area. The locally owned shop focuses on colorful, wholesome ingredients, with options built around fresh fruit, superfoods, and lighter meals that work for breakfast, lunch, or a mid-day pick-me-up.

The opening is also part of the broader Rialto Blocks Revitalization Project, which continues to bring new businesses and renewed energy to this stretch of downtown. Each new storefront adds another reason for people to walk the area, support local owners, and rediscover a part of Tacoma that has been steadily changing.

Eternal Soul Bowl is celebrating its grand opening now, and the community is encouraged to stop by, say hello, and welcome them to the neighborhood. Whether you’re already an açaí bowl fan or just looking for something fresh downtown, it’s another new Tacoma business worth checking out.
