Overnight Lane Closures Coming to I-5, SR 509, and SR 99

Tacoma drivers may want to plan for a few slower nights on the road this week.

WSDOT road work is bringing overnight lane closures to parts of I-5, SR 509, and SR 99 in Fife and Tacoma. Crews are scheduled to paint bridges over I-5 and SR 99 in Fife and install overhead highway signs on SR 509 in Tacoma.

The closures are tied to the SR 167 Completion Project, which will eventually add about six miles of new tolled highway between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma. According to KOMO News, the section between I-5 and the Port of Tacoma is expected to open in September, while the full project is scheduled to be completed in 2030.

Drivers are being asked to allow extra time, expect delays, and use caution through work zones. Some closures will leave multiple lanes open, while others will narrow traffic more significantly depending on the location and time of night.

For the full list of dates, times, and affected stretches of roadway, see all the closures in this KOMO News article.

Want to Make Your Block Cleaner? Tacoma Has a Program for That

Want to help keep your corner of Tacoma cleaner?

The City of Tacoma’s Adopt-a-Spot program gives residents, businesses, and community groups a way to take long-term ownership of a public area they care about. The program builds on Tacoma’s Neighborhood Litter Patrol Program, which provides free cleanup supplies and disposal support for people helping clean sidewalks, streets, parks, and other public areas within city limits.

Adopt-a-Spot is designed for volunteers who are ready to make an ongoing commitment. To qualify, participants must first complete at least four neighborhood cleanups within a year. Once enrolled, Adopt-a-Spot participants agree to stay active for two years and complete at least four cleanups per year. In return, they receive the same support as Neighborhood Litter Patrol volunteers — and may also get a recognition sign placed in their adopted area.

The idea is simple: cleaner neighborhoods happen when people pitch in consistently, not just once in a while. Anyone interested can start by joining the Neighborhood Litter Patrol Program, then apply for Adopt-a-Spot after completing the required cleanups. For more information, contact the City at [email protected] or call 311.

Fort Nisqually Launches First-Ever Nisqually Live Summer Event

Fort Nisqually is trying something new this summer.

For the first time ever Fort Nisqually Living History Museum will host Nisqually Live, a brand-new 21-and-over evening event at Point Defiance Park. The event is set for Friday, August 7, from 6 to 9 p.m., and will bring live music, food, drinks, and hands-on activities into the historic setting of the fort.

Guests can enjoy Pacific Northwest bluegrass and folk music from the Oly Mountain Boys, with Pass the Lady Back opening the evening. There will also be paper marbling and lavender sachet making, giving visitors a chance to do more than just listen and watch. Buddy’s Chicken & Waffles will be on site, and beer and wine will be available for purchase through the Fort Nisqually Foundation, with proceeds helping support building improvements and restoration work.

Tickets are $30 online or $35 at the door. Parking at the museum is limited, but overflow parking will be available at the Point Defiance Zoo parking lot, with shuttles running to the fort every 15 minutes. Since this is a 21-and-over event, guests should remember to bring ID.
