Tacoma is testing a more focused approach to work along business corridors, coordinating city services in selected areas instead of spreading attention across the city at once. A City Council resolution established the high-investment corridor initiative and directed the city manager to prioritize cross-department work addressing safety and neighborhood conditions.
The first 90-day pilot took place along Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Hilltop. City staff reported that the effort included graffiti removal, pedestrian lighting improvements and landscape maintenance. Crews also trimmed 103 trees to improve visibility.
A second pilot is underway on Sixth Avenue between South Mildred and South Jackson streets. Its stated focus includes pedestrian safety, lighting, landscaping and outreach to businesses along the corridor. The work covers a defined stretch of the avenue rather than all of Sixth Avenue.
The City’s resolution also identifies South 38th Street and North Proctor as high-investment corridors. During a committee discussion, a council member suggested that the Lincoln District and Pacific Avenue could be considered for future improvements, but those suggestions do not mean the initiative has expanded to those areas. The committee also raised the question of how the focused work could fit into future budgets.
