A Longtime Ruston Bar Is Changing Hands This October
The Unicorn Sports Bar is expected to close in mid-October as the Barker family prepares to sell the longtime Ruston gathering place. The prospective buyers are Gary and Nathan Wescott, the father-and-son owners of downtown Tacoma’s Odd Otter Brewing Co. The purchase paperwork is still being finalized.
The change comes after a difficult stretch for a bar known for pool and late-night visits from hospitality workers. Manager Trevor Barker told The News Tribune that business slowed after Ruston barred alcohol sales after midnight in 2024. What the Wescotts will do with the space has not been announced.

Help Make Tacoma Greener on October 10
Green Tacoma Day returns Saturday, October 10, from 9 a.m. to noon, with volunteer projects across the city. Residents can plant trees and native plants, remove invasive weeds, care for natural areas and learn about the places they’re helping restore. No experience is needed; organizers provide tools, gloves and guidance.
The projects offer different ways to take part. At Wapato Hills Park, volunteers will plant 18 trees, including fruit trees intended to become an edible orchard. Other opportunities include habitat work at Franklin Park and restoration of the qʷiqʷəlut salt marsh.

The Hidden Risk Behind Union Station’s Famous Dome
Tacoma’s Union Station is moving closer to a major renovation. A September 10 project filing outlines earthquake protections and updates to the landmark’s roof, fire systems, security and interior. The work matters because a federal assessment identified Union Station as one of the highest seismic risks in the General Services Administration’s building portfolio.
The station’s copper dome and Chihuly-filled rotunda make it one of downtown’s most recognizable spaces. Construction is tentatively expected to begin in late 2027 and continue into 2030. The plans offer a glimpse of how crews could strengthen a 1911 landmark while preserving what makes it Union Station.
