Café, Concerts and Community: ALMA’s Next Act Takes Shape

The former ALMA building in downtown Tacoma is getting a new life. The Puyallup Tribe announced September 21 that it plans to reopen the arts venue as Riverbend Social, with a café, lounge and performance hall. The Tribe is aiming to open those spaces in spring 2027.
The plan keeps much of what made ALMA a gathering place while leaving room for something new. The café’s small open-mic stage is expected to remain, and the general manager is exploring locally sourced traditional foods and future cultural events. Menus and show schedules have yet to be announced.

PLU Researchers Are Exploring a Hidden World in Tacoma’s Trees

Small stands of aspen trees around the Tacoma area are getting a closer look from PLU researchers. Biology students Ayre Takamoto and Corban Piper spent the summer working with professor Olivia Cope to document the insects living on the trees and compare groves separated by developed land.
The team is also exploring whether these aspens could tell researchers something about nearby wetlands. That possibility remains a research question, but the work offers a new reason to notice the modest groves tucked into our local landscape.

Have a Tacoma Arts Idea? The City Has $4,000 or $6,000 to Help
A neighborhood performance, a hands-on workshop or a community festival could get a financial head start from the City of Tacoma. Applications are open for $4,000 or $6,000 Community Arts Projects awards supporting public programming that takes place in Tacoma during 2027.
The opportunity is open to eligible local organizations and organized groups; they do not have to be 501(c) nonprofits. Applications are due October 26 at 11:59 p.m., and the City is holding a free virtual application workshop on October 7. Awards are competitive and depend on approval of the City budget.
