One of Tacoma’s most immersive fall traditions returns October 2 and 3, when campfires and candlelight transform Fort Nisqually Living History Museum into a bustling settlement from 1857. After a short shuttle ride from the Point Defiance Zoo parking lot, visitors will spend about an hour walking through the darkened fort and quietly observing more than 100 costumed interpreters portraying Hudson’s Bay Company workers, American settlers and their families. Songs, dances, games and conversations unfold around guests—but the people of 1857 never acknowledge that their 21st-century visitors are there.

Advance tickets are required, and several early tour times have already sold out—so this is not an event to leave until the last minute. Tickets are $26 for adults and $19 for ages 4–17; children younger than 4 are free but must ride on an adult’s lap aboard the shuttle. The tour takes place rain or shine on uneven ground, and visitors should arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled departure. Umbrellas, flashlights, photography and strollers are not permitted.

Tacoma Arts Month returns in October with a milestone worth celebrating: 25 years of bringing the city’s artists, performers and neighbors together. The free, citywide celebration begins with Kaleidoscope from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 3, at the Tacoma Public Library’s Main Branch. Visitors can explore local exhibitions, live music and dance, hands-on art projects, cultural programming and activities for children—all while coming and going at their own pace.

The celebration continues October 17 and 18 with the free Tacoma Studio Tour, when more than 100 artists will welcome visitors into working studios across the city. Guests can watch demonstrations, try creative activities, meet the people behind the work and purchase pieces directly from local makers. Those two signature weekends are only part of the month: Tacoma’s growing Arts Month calendar gathers public exhibitions, performances, workshops and cultural events happening throughout October.

Musashi’s is preparing to open an affordable Japanese restaurant at 1740 Pacific Avenue, directly across from UW Tacoma. The regional chain is moving into the former Hello, Cupcake space with a condensed version of its usual menu, including sushi rolls, teriyaki, curry, bento boxes, fried rice and rice bowls.

Basic rolls will begin at $5.50, while some vegetarian options will cost as little as $4.50. Owner Jun Park hoped to open during the week of September 14, although the Tacoma location had not yet appeared on Musashi’s website as of September 19. Anticipated hours are 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. daily.
