Seven Ways to Celebrate Oktoberfest Around Tacoma This Fall
Oktoberfest season is arriving around Tacoma with more variety than you might expect. Redd Dog is throwing two dog-friendly parties, while September 26 brings a free celebration at McMenamins Elks Temple, an all-ages celebration at Narrows Brewing that includes a custom one-liter stein and a championship stein-holding qualifier at Dystopian State.
The festivities continue with German cars at Griot’s Garage, live music at Berliner Beerhall and the region’s largest Munich-style celebration at the Washington State Fairgrounds. We gathered the dates, prices, age requirements and distinguishing features to help you choose the right celebration.

Someone Tried to Steal a Wright Park Statue—and Uncovered a 113-Year-Old Secret
Someone’s attempt to steal the century-old Henrik Ibsen bust from Wright Park led Parks Tacoma employees to an unexpected discovery. After removing the damaged bronze statue for safekeeping, workers found a Norwegian-language Tacoma newspaper from May 2, 1913, hidden inside—along with an Indian Head penny and what appears to be a Norwegian coin.
The newspaper featured the Ibsen bust on its front page and was published just two weeks before Tacoma’s Norwegian community dedicated the monument. Parks Tacoma hopes to repair and reinstall the statue next year, but the failed theft has already revealed a piece of Tacoma history hidden for 113 years.

A Race Car Lost for 98 Years Has Resurfaced in Tacoma
A one-of-one race car that disappeared for more than 90 years has resurfaced at LeMay – America’s Car Museum. Charlie Wiggins designed, built and drove the Wiggins Special to four Gold & Glory Sweepstakes championships while segregation kept Black drivers out of competitions such as the Indianapolis 500.
The recovered car is the centerpiece of For Gold & Glory, an immersive exhibition opening Saturday, September 19. Opening day includes family activities, live jazz and free museum admission for visitors 18 and younger.
