Point Defiance’s Old Rental Boats Are Making Way for a New Fleet

Point Defiance Marina is retiring the last survivor of its well-worn motorboat fleet and replacing the old rentals with ten Whaly 435R boats manufactured in the Netherlands. The new boats will carry 20-horsepower motors—up from 9.9 horsepower—and are expected to become available beginning in November after they have been assembled and outfitted.
Customers will also be able to reserve the new boats, eliminating the first-come, first-served uncertainty associated with the outgoing fleet. It is a modern update to a Tacoma waterfront tradition stretching back more than a century, when the first permanent Point Defiance boathouse began putting visitors onto the water.

Walk, Bike or Roll Through Tacoma’s South End on September 26

A free festival will connect three South End destinations on Saturday, September 26—and getting from one to the next is part of the fun. Move & Groove invites participants to walk, bike or roll between Birney Elementary School, Charlotte’s Blueberry Park and Ryan’s Park.
Visitors can explore at their own pace or join a family-friendly group bicycle ride. Live music, a guided park walk, face painting, balloons and games will be spread across the route during the three-hour neighborhood celebration.

TAM Is Becoming an Adults-Only Wonderland for One Night

Tacoma Art Museum is trading its usual quiet galleries for an adults-only evening of art, cocktails and carefully orchestrated chaos. Wonderland will take over TAM after dark on Saturday, September 26, with two themed bars, DJs, immersive soundscapes and a place to create your own Mad Hatter-inspired headwear.
Interactive art, games, pop-up performances and other surprises will be scattered throughout the museum—but organizers are leaving some of the evening’s curious encounters unexplained. The 21-and-older event runs from 8 to 11 p.m., with tickets listed at $75.
