A 42-Foot Machine Will Tower Over Tacoma’s Next Family Event

Port of Tacoma - Tacoma Local Minute

Previous Touch-A-Truck event at the Port of Tacoma

The Port of Tacoma is bringing some of its biggest equipment out for a closer look during its free Touch-A-Truck event on Saturday, October 3. Families can stand beneath a 42-foot-tall straddle carrier, see a train engine up close and explore maintenance and security vehicles normally associated with Tacoma’s working waterfront.

Visitors can also walk through the Port’s Centennial shipping container, meet the people who help keep the Port running and enjoy free snacks. More than 3,000 people attended last year, making Touch-A-Truck the Port’s largest community event. Admission is free, but advance registration is requested.

Citywide Book Club - Tacoma Local Minute

Award-winning author Daisy Hernández is coming to UW Tacoma on October 1 for a free Tacoma Reads conversation about citizenship, immigration and the complicated question of who gets to belong. Hernández will join Mayor Anders Ibsen for an evening featuring a reading, audience questions and a book signing.

Her latest book, Citizenship: Notes on an American Myth, combines memoir, history and cultural criticism, drawing partly on the experiences of her Colombian mother and Cuban refugee father. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at William W. Philip Hall, and advance registration is encouraged.

Tacoma recently designated the 18-block North Union Avenue Greenway a historic landmark, protecting its distinctive footprint and park-like character.

The designation does not protect every individual tree or prevent routine maintenance. News Tribune reporter Becca Most explains how a former railroad corridor became one of Tacoma’s most recognizable green spaces—and why neighbors worked to preserve it.
