The New SR 167 Expressway Is Open. Here’s What Drivers Should Know

The first two miles of the new SR 167 Expressway opened Sunday, connecting Interstate 5 in Fife with SR 509 near the Port of Tacoma. Drivers can access the highway at I-5, 54th Avenue East and SR 509, giving commuters and freight traffic a new alternative to local surface streets.
The new section will remain free until tolling begins in December, when Good To Go! customers will pay $1 each way. It is only the first portion of a planned six-mile expressway: The remaining connection between I-5 and the existing SR 167 in Puyallup is expected to open in 2029.

The South Sound Showdown is also the culmination of an eight-week business accelerator in which six local students helped design, market and produce the entire event. They recruited participants, pursued sponsors and worked through the real-world challenges of building something people would pay to attend.
