Tacoma’s Armory Is Becoming the City’s Most Unpredictable Stage

Tacoma Armory - Tacoma Local Minute

Tacoma Armory

Just months after Tacoma Arts Live announced that it would end most of its programming and put the historic Tacoma Armory up for sale, the building isn’t going quiet. Between September 18 and 25, its intimate Live at the Eleanor series will bring traditional flamenco, long-form improv and a two-channel R&B silent disco to the Armory’s Roosevelt Room.

The series itself began in 2025, but this eclectic new lineup arrives as Tacoma Arts Live restructures under new CEO Katie Stricker and explores what its future at the Armory could look like. With recurring comedy and silent-disco dates already scheduled through December, the historic building’s next act may be smaller, more local—and considerably less predictable.

Can a Drink With Someone You Disagree With Make Democracy Stronger?

Washington State Historical Society - Tacoma Local Minute

What if America’s political problem isn’t only what we argue about—but where we do it? On Saturday, September 19, the Washington State History Museum will host a free lecture by Washington State University philosophy professor Michael Goldsby, who argues that social media’s reward systems encourage anger and hyperpartisanship while face-to-face conversations make it easier to find common ground.

Despite its title, How Beer Might Save Democracy isn’t really about alcohol. Goldsby’s proposed remedy could unfold over a beer, coffee or another shared activity—the important part is leaving the online arena and speaking with people in person. The fifth annual Henry R. Fenbert Challenging History Lecture runs from 5 to 8 p.m., and advance registration is required.

A Native-Plant Shopping Window Is About to Open in Tacoma

Parks Tacoma - Tacoma Local Minute

Parks Tacoma’s Fall Native Plant Sale opens online at 7 a.m. Friday, September 18, and continues through September 27. The tentative shopping list includes roughly 100 choices—from vine maples, Pacific dogwoods and evergreen huckleberries to sword ferns, salal, camas bulbs and packets of native seeds.

Orders must be collected at the Tacoma Nature Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. October 3–5. Parks Tacoma says native plants can conserve water while providing habitat for local birds, mammals and insects. Some selections appear to be available in very limited quantities, so anyone looking for a particular plant may want to shop early.
