When students arrive at Lowell Elementary on Wednesday, September 9, they’ll be entering the sixth incarnation of a school that predates Tacoma itself. Lowell began in 1869 as a one-room log schoolhouse and was later renamed for poet James Russell Lowell. Its new $33 million, three-story building spans 60,000 square feet and has room for roughly 500 students.

The new Lowell is Tacoma Public Schools’ first educational building to make extensive use of cross-laminated timber, giving much of the interior a warm, natural appearance. Despite the modern design, the school carries pieces of its past forward through reclaimed wood, original signs and “Fish Mobile,” a mosaic created by Lowell students during the 2004–05 school year.

Tacoma artist David Hytone is bringing something considerably less conventional than a collection of paintings to Tacoma Art Museum. Opening September 17, The Lee Shore is a site-specific installation that combines paintings with sculptural elements, counterweights and working mechanisms—while playing with scale in ways that may make visitors reconsider exactly what they’re looking at. The exhibition will remain on view through January 3.

The installation grows out of Hytone’s decade-long practice of constructing images from collage, paint transfers and castoffs from earlier work. This new chapter turns more heavily toward symbolism, isolation in an age of constant connection, the unreliability of memory and what Hytone calls the absurdity of the world around us. Visitors can hear him explain how the unusual exhibition came together during a free artist talk at TAM on Saturday, October 3, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Tacoma’s next distinctive small business may already be selling at markets, taking orders online or quietly operating from someone’s spare room. Spaceworks Tacoma is accepting applications for its Fall 2026 Creative Enterprise cohort, a selective 12-week program designed to help creative entrepreneurs turn tested ideas into stronger, more sustainable businesses.

Participants will develop an actionable business plan, practice pitching their company and receive benefits including commercial-lease assistance, professional photography, a one-year trial membership in the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber and a $1,200 stipend for professional services. Applications close at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, September 27, and the program begins October 27.
