Coffee, Knives and Refills: South 11th Is Throwing a Block Party

Coffee, kitchen knives and refillable shampoo might sound like an unlikely combination, but three independent businesses have transformed a small stretch of South 11th Street into one of downtown Tacoma’s most interesting new retail clusters.

On September 19, Civic Roasters, Hive Provisions + Refillery and Tacoma Knife Sharpening & Mercantile will close part of Fawcett Avenue for a shared grand-opening block party. All three are Spaceworks alumni—and each gives Tacomans a very different reason to explore this previously quiet corner of downtown.

A Tacoma 5K Is Racing Against the Most Famous Four Notes in Music

Beethoven has been dead for nearly two centuries, but Tacoma runners will soon have an opportunity to race him. Symphony Tacoma’s Beat Beethoven 5K challenges participants to complete a loop through Wright Park before Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony reaches its final note.

The music gives runners approximately 30 minutes to cover 3.1 miles—and anyone who wins the race against Beethoven earns more than bragging rights. Walkers and casual runners are welcome too, making this part road race, part outdoor concert and one of Tacoma’s most unusual September events.

Tacoma’s City Council Is Leaving City Hall—and Heading South

Star Center

South Tacoma residents will not have to make the usual trip downtown to speak with the full Tacoma City Council later this month. The mayor and council members are bringing an official business meeting—and its Community Forum—to STAR Center on September 30.

The change gives neighborhood residents a rare opportunity to raise concerns about city services and policies closer to home. It is more than an informal listening session: the council will conduct official business before opening the floor to broader community input.
