After Three Massive Rescues, Tacoma Humane Needs Help
The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County is now caring for more than 500 cats and kittens after animal control seized 101 from a Northeast Tacoma home. The surviving animals arrived just weeks after 61 cats were rescued from an abandoned boat near Owen Beach and another 20 were found inside a vehicle, placing extraordinary pressure on the shelter and its foster network.
Tacoma Humane is asking the community to donate towels, fleece blankets, paper towels and newspapers to help care for the influx. Supplies can be delivered to the shelter at 2608 Center Street from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily, while financial donations and adoption information are available through the shelter’s website.

Accused of Stealing $600,000 in Food Benefits, Tacoma Grocer Is Captured
A former Tacoma grocery-store owner accused of taking more than $600,000 from the federal food-assistance program reportedly has been arrested in India. The FBI recently added Manjit Singh Bedi to its Most Wanted Fraudsters list after authorities said he violated court restrictions, drove into Canada and fled to India.
Federal prosecutors allege that Bedi used Asian Grocery Store in Tacoma to charge customers’ EBT cards, give them approximately half the transaction amount in cash and keep the remainder. Punjab Police announced his capture Friday, although U.S. authorities had not yet confirmed his custody status or announced plans to return him to Washington to face trial.

Tacoma Public Library cardholders can now receive free online assistance with homework, essay writing, test preparation and college-level coursework through Tutor.com. Students can find help with subjects ranging from elementary math to AP classes, while test-preparation resources cover the SAT, ACT, GED, ASVAB, citizenship test and several graduate-school entrance exams.
The service is not just for students. Adults can use Tutor.com for private career coaching, résumé reviews and job-search assistance. The library has also added TumbleBooks, offering animated stories, audio read-alongs, chapter books and graphic novels for younger readers—all available without an additional fee.
