Mary Bridge’s Newest Employees Have Four Legs and Very Important Jobs

Filmore & Langley, the newest facility dogs at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital.

Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital has welcomed two new employees—and both of them report to work on four legs. Filmore and Langley are specially trained facility dogs who will help healthcare professionals comfort young patients, reduce anxiety during procedures and encourage children working through treatment or rehabilitation.

Unlike visiting therapy animals, facility dogs become part of a hospital’s care team and work consistently alongside trained handlers. Filmore and Langley join longtime Mary Bridge facility dog Olaf, whose years of service have shown that sometimes the most reassuring caregiver in the room is the one with a wagging tail.

Tacoma Is Losing Another Major Industrial Employer

Georgia-Pacific will permanently close its gypsum manufacturing plant on the Tacoma Tideflats, eliminating the facility’s entire workforce. A state filing lists 120 affected positions, while the company says all 125 full-time employees will be impacted. Most layoffs are expected October 30, with the plant closing completely near the end of the year.

The company blames a prolonged downturn in home sales and remodeling activity, which has weakened demand for drywall and other gypsum products. Coming three years after WestRock eliminated approximately 400 jobs at its Tacoma paper mill, the closure represents another substantial loss for the city’s industrial workforce—and leaves the future of the Alexander Avenue property uncertain.

Want to Support a Tacoma Small Business? Try One Run by a Kid

Approximately 80 young entrepreneurs will take over the Waterfront Market at Ruston this Saturday for the Tacoma Children’s Business Fair. Children ages 5 to 17 have created their own brands, developed products, set prices and prepared sales pitches for more than 60 kid-run businesses offering artwork, baked goods, jewelry, crochet, toys, stickers, 3D-printed creations and much more.

The free indoor fair runs from noon to 3 p.m. at 5101 Yacht Club Road. Parents may provide support, but the children are expected to run their booths, interact with customers and handle their own sales—giving Tacoma shoppers an opportunity to encourage a budding entrepreneur while taking home something genuinely original.
