Tacoma’s Most Unusual New School Opens Next Week

Maritime|253 Skills Center

When Tacoma students return to school September 9, some will begin their day inside one of the region’s most unusual new learning environments. Maritime|253 is a new 42,000-square-foot waterfront skills center where high school students can study everything from marine welding and robotics to cybersecurity, drones, logistics and clean-energy technology.

Students remain enrolled at their regular high schools while spending half the day at Maritime|253, gaining hands-on experience, industry credentials and potential college credit. With specialized welding and robotics labs, logistics simulators and room for as many as 600 students each day, the new school is designed to connect South Sound teenagers directly with the maritime and industrial careers operating just beyond its doors.

Polar Bears, Red Wolves and Icy Treats Take Over Point Defiance Zoo

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is sending summer out with a splash during its End of Summer Blast, happening Labor Day weekend, September 5–7. Animals throughout the zoo will cool down with icy treats and summer-themed enrichment, while visitors can enjoy a full schedule of keeper chats, animal encounters, live programs and hands-on activities.

The three-day celebration includes appearances by some of the zoo’s biggest personalities—from polar bears and red wolves to marine mammals and clouded leopards. Guests can also cool off inside the Pacific Seas Aquarium and explore the Tidal Touch Zone. The festivities run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and are included with regular zoo admission or membership.

A Free Labor Day Festival Shines a Light on One of Tacoma’s Hidden Museums

Cheney Stadium will host a free Labor Day celebration Monday featuring two unusual softball matchups: Army versus Air Force and Tacoma longshore workers versus Tacoma firefighters. The Buffalo Soldiers Museum’s family festival will also include food trucks, music, children’s activities, free haircuts, historical exhibits and a giveaway providing backpacks and school supplies to 150 students.

The event also puts a spotlight on one of Tacoma’s lesser-known cultural treasures. The 9th and 10th Horse Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers Museum was founded from the collection of William Jones, a Buffalo Soldier, Korean War prisoner and longtime Hilltop businessman. Today, the small volunteer-operated museum preserves more than a century of artifacts documenting the courage and contributions of Black American service members..
