Love Stories Are Getting a New Home on Tacoma’s Waterfront
Tacoma book lovers are getting a new place to browse this fall. Bewitched Romance will open its first permanent physical location Sept. 26 inside the Waterfront Market at Ruston, bringing its selection of romance novels, special editions, gifts and bookish merchandise from online sales and pop-ups into a regular storefront.
The shop is also known for its “Blind Dates with a Book,” where readers provide their preferences and receive a hand-selected mystery title without knowing exactly what they're getting. Opening weekend Sept. 26–27 will include author signings, raffles, giveaways and goodie bags for the first 50 people in line each day.

School Buses Are Back — And Passing One Could Cost You $500
School buses are returning to Tacoma streets, and Washington officials are reminding drivers that illegally passing a stopped bus carries a mandatory $500 fine that cannot be waived, reduced or suspended. During a one-day survey this year, Washington bus drivers reported an astonishing 960 illegal passes.
The rules aren't quite as simple as “see a bus, everybody stops.” Whether traffic traveling in the opposite direction must stop depends on how many lanes the road has and whether it's divided. We've put together a quick refresher on when you need to stop — both to protect Tacoma kids and keep that $500 in your pocket.

He Went to Prison at 19. His Work Fighting Wildfires Helped Set Him Free

James LaRon Ellis entered prison at 19 after committing a fatal crime as a teenager. Seventeen years later, a Pierce County judge has ordered him released — and what Ellis did with those years in prison played a major role in giving him a second chance. While incarcerated, he completed numerous job-training programs and became a wildland firefighter, leaving prison to help protect homes and communities from wildfires before returning to his cell.
At his resentencing Friday, Judge Stanley Rumbaugh called Ellis’ rehabilitation and firefighting work “remarkable,” ultimately concluding that keeping him incarcerated longer would accomplish little that the previous 17-plus years hadn't already done. Ellis told the court he intends to continue growing and “give back to the community in a big way.” His journey from teenage offender to firefighter — and the unusual path that finally brought him home — is quite a story.
