Tacoma Is Losing One of Its Two Fred Meyer Stores

Tacoma is about to lose one of its two Fred Meyer stores. The company confirmed that it will close its James Center location at 6901 S. 19th St., though it has not yet announced a final closing date. The store provides groceries, pharmacy services and other everyday necessities to West Tacoma residents, and its closure will leave the Stevens Street Fred Meyer as the chain’s only remaining Tacoma location.
The closure also affects about 100 unionized employees, and UFCW Local 367 warns that losing the store could significantly reduce affordable grocery access for seniors, low-income households and residents who rely on public transportation. The union also says surrounding James Center businesses could feel the loss of the customer traffic generated by the store.

Soul Food, Live Music and 30+ Food Vendors Are Coming to Downtown Tacoma
Come hungry next Saturday. Tacoma's third annual SoulFull Festival takes over Broadway between 9th and 11th streets Sept. 5, bringing 30+ food vendors downtown for a free seven-hour celebration. And “soul food” is being interpreted broadly: expect Southern and Creole dishes alongside African, Jamaican, Trinidadian, Polynesian, Hispanic, Asian and other cuisines.
There's plenty beyond the food, too, including live music, a DJ, line dancing, local vendors, interactive art, a beer garden and kids activities. The festival runs from noon–7 p.m., admission is free, and organizers say downtown garage parking will be free for the day as well.

Dogs, a 2.4-Mile Race and Root Beer Floats? Only in Tacoma!

Dogs, running and root beer floats come together at Titlow Park next Saturday when Parks Tacoma's Thirsty Dog Run returns Sept. 5. The 2.4-mile course can be run or walked and travels across grass, dirt and paved pathways around the park. Dogs are welcome but aren't required, so humans without four-legged running partners can join the fun too.
Participants who purchase a souvenir cup can finish the evening with a root beer float, but only 72 new cups are available. The race itself is limited to 250 participants, so anyone interested shouldn't necessarily count on being able to register at Titlow on race day.
