Tacoma’s New Dog-Friendly Beer Garden Is Finally Open

Tacoma's newest brewery just added a major new attraction. Redd Dog Brewing Co. has opened its long-awaited outdoor beer garden at 2302 Fawcett Ave., with picnic tables, barrel seating, lawn space, Adirondack chairs and cornhole. The biergarten is open to all ages — and well-behaved dogs are welcome too.

Redd Dog took over the former Black Fleet Brewing space and opened in June with house-brewed beer and a Mexican-inspired menu of tacos, burritos and shareables. There's even a separate food menu for four-legged customers. With the outdoor space now finished, the brewery has completed the family- and dog-friendly concept its owners envisioned when they moved from Sixth Avenue.

We Now Know What Killed the Whale Found in the Port of Tacoma

Fin Whale Breaching

We now know what killed the massive fin whale that arrived unexpectedly in the Port of Tacoma earlier this week.

A necropsy found that the approximately 67-foot female was alive and apparently healthy when she was struck by a vessel. Researchers found a healthy layer of blubber and other signs that she had been feeding normally, ruling out the possibility that she was already dead when the collision occurred.

Exactly where she was struck remains unknown. The container ship traveled from China, and researchers say the collision could have happened near the Aleutian Islands or elsewhere along its North Pacific route. The crew may not even have realized it had hit a whale — a problem researchers say is particularly difficult at night, when fin whales spend more time near the surface and can be extremely difficult for large ships to see and avoid.
