Tacoma kids looking to hit the field or the volleyball court this fall can sign up now for Parks Tacoma’s youth soccer and volleyball leagues.

Both recreational and competitive leagues are available, with programs designed to give kids of different ages and skill levels a chance to play.

⚽ Soccer: Recreational leagues are offered for 6U, 8U and 10U players, with competitive leagues for 10U, 12U and 14U.

🏐 Volleyball: Recreational leagues are available for 9U and 12U, while competitive leagues are offered for 12U and 15U.

Families have until Sept. 19 to register. Practices begin Sept. 28, with games running from Oct. 3 through Nov. 21.

Cost doesn't necessarily have to keep a child on the sidelines. Parks Tacoma offers financial assistance for Tacoma residents who need help paying for eligible recreation programs.

The youth sports program is also supported by Land O'Frost, Mary Bridge Children's Hospital and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health.

Tacoma shoppers may want to take a look in the freezer.

Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream has recalled select packages of Outshine Fruit Bars after consumers reported finding glass in the frozen treats.

The affected products were distributed nationwide and are sold in Washington by major chains including Fred Meyer, Target and Walmart.

The recall includes 6-count, 2.5-ounce packages of:

Certain 24-count Outshine Variety Packs are also included.

Importantly, the recall does not include every package of those flavors. Only specific batch codes and best-before dates are affected, so consumers should check the information printed on the bottom of the package against the FDA's recall list.

Dreyer’s initiated the voluntary recall after receiving reports of glass in the products. No illnesses or injuries have been reported.

Anyone who has one of the recalled packages should throw it away or return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.

Other Outshine products and varieties are not included in the recall.

Tacoma drivers may encounter some new detours beginning Tuesday as the City starts another round of work on residential streets.

The closures are part of Tacoma’s Residential Street Restoration Program, which repairs and maintains neighborhood streets throughout the city.

Work is projected to begin Tuesday, Aug. 25, with the latest round of projects expected to continue through Oct. 30. The schedule is weather-dependent, however, so individual closure dates could change.

Among the streets included in the upcoming work is East D Street, beginning at East 3rd Street.

During construction, affected streets may be closed to through traffic while crews complete maintenance work. Residents who live along the affected streets will generally still have local access, but drivers traveling through the neighborhoods should watch for signs and detours.

The Residential Street Restoration Program is part of Tacoma’s ongoing effort to extend the life of neighborhood streets by repairing pavement before more extensive — and expensive — reconstruction becomes necessary.

Because the work will roll out over several weeks rather than happening everywhere at once, residents should check the City’s latest schedule before assuming a particular street will be closed.
