Backyard Fire Pits Are Now Off-Limits
Tacoma has joined Lakewood, University Place, Steilacoom and unincorporated Pierce County under a Stage 2 burn ban as dry conditions and wildfire risk continue across the region. The Tacoma restrictions took effect Aug. 17.
Stage 2 prohibits outdoor burning, including recreational burn pits, backyard fire pits and fireplaces, as well as land-clearing fires and yard-debris burning. Tacoma Fire also notes that burning trash and yard debris is never allowed within city limits.
Barbecues that use gas, wood or charcoal are still allowed as long as they’re used on a noncombustible surface. Violations can result in citations and fines, and anyone responsible for an illegal fire may also be billed for the cost of the emergency response.
Tacoma Library Is Handing You the Mic
Tacoma Public Library is inviting teens and adults to grab the microphone for an afternoon of karaoke at the Main Library.
The free event takes over the Wonder Lab on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 1:30 p.m. No registration is required — just show up ready to sing, cheer on other performers or both.
The karaoke session is designed for adults and teens and is open to anyone who wants to add a little more volume than usual to a trip to the library.

Hilltop Is Still Waiting on Its Post Office
Hilltop residents will have to wait a little longer for the Martin Luther King Jr. Way post office to reopen.
The USPS station at 1220 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Way has been closed since around last summer, according to a local USPS supervisor. Signs posted at the building say the closure is due to electrical problems.
A USPS spokesperson says the location is now expected to reopen in mid-fall after repairs are completed.
