UW Tacoma is preparing for another major expansion, with a new residence hall officially in the works — along with the campus’s first-ever dining hall.

The project is part of the university’s effort to continue shifting from a primarily commuter campus toward more of a traditional college-town experience. UW Tacoma says construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the new building opening in late 2029.

The university says the expansion will continue the same pattern that built the campus in the first place: growing one building at a time while reusing and adding to its historic downtown footprint.

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is accepting applications for its adult volunteer program through Aug. 31, with several different ways to get involved.

Openings include horticulture, aquarium diving, zoological work in the Asian Forest Sanctuary and guest interpretation. The zoo says the opportunities are aimed at people interested in animals, conservation or simply helping visitors connect with what they’re seeing.

Applications are open now for adults who want to volunteer and become part of the team supporting the zoo’s conservation and education work.

Tacoma Public Schools is making a major round of athletic-field upgrades across the district this summer, with new or improved facilities coming to several schools.

Projects include new baseball and softball facilities and expanded tennis courts at Silas High School, plus field and track improvements at Mount Tahoma High School, Gray Middle School, Birney Elementary and Truman Middle School. The work is funded through the 2024 Capital Projects Bond and is expected to open in phases through fall and winter 2026.

Many of the new turf fields will use Pivot turf, which is designed to play more like natural grass while requiring less maintenance. The district says the surface contains no added PFAS, does not use loose rubber pellets and can be recycled at the end of its lifespan.
