Grand Central Bakery is recalling 517 loaves of Potato Sourdough sold across the Seattle-Tacoma area after a pallet nail was discovered inside one loaf. The bakery says the problem was isolated to a single batch of dough.

The recall covers Potato Market Loaves, Potato Table Loaves and Mini Potato Loaves sold on Aug. 10 at grocery stores, restaurants, wholesalers and Grand Central Bakery cafes. Tacoma-area retailers that received the bread include Fred Meyer, Hilltop Red Apple, QFC, Thriftway and Whole Foods, among others.

No injuries or illnesses have been reported. Anyone who bought the affected Potato Sourdough on Aug. 10 should throw it away and contact Grand Central Bakery for assistance.

Tacoma could soon join a countywide effort aimed at replacing the current patchwork of homelessness services with a more coordinated regional system.

The City Council is expected to consider a resolution Aug. 25 expressing its intent to help launch Pierce County’s Unified Regional Approach, or URA. The plan is built around shared data and closer coordination among local governments and service providers.

Pierce County Councilmember Jani Hitchen told the council that Tacoma’s participation would be especially important because it is the county’s largest city and home to many of the services currently being provided.

For more than 75 years, lighthouse keepers watched over Browns Point, maintaining the light and fog signal that helped guide ships through Commencement Bay. Today, the 38-foot lighthouse is automated, but much of that history is still preserved at Browns Point Lighthouse Park.

The News Tribune recently took an inside look at the lighthouse and the life of its early keepers, including Oscar Brown, who arrived at Browns Point with his wife Annie in 1903. Before automation, keeping the light meant everything from rowing out for supplies and maintaining the grounds to winding the fog apparatus every 45 minutes through the night. If the mechanism failed, Brown had to strike the fog bell manually with a sledgehammer.

There’s plenty more history behind this little landmark — including how the current Art Deco lighthouse came to be, what remains from the keeper era, and how visitors can occasionally get behind the gates.
