NEW: The Tacoma Local 7

We’re launching something new at Tacoma Local Minute: The Tacoma Local 7 — curated guides to Tacoma businesses, restaurants and local favorites worth knowing about.

Our first guide is:

Best Restaurants in Tacoma: 7 Local Places Worth Trying

This isn’t a ranking of Tacoma’s seven “best” restaurants. It’s seven very different local spots, each worth trying for a different reason.

From French-inspired fare in Proctor to Vietnamese BBQ in the Lincoln District, there’s probably at least one place on this list you haven’t tried yet.

Think we missed one? You’ll also have a chance to tell us which Tacoma restaurant belongs on a future list.

Downtown Tacoma Gets an Island Takeover

Downtown Tacoma is getting a Caribbean takeover this Sunday as the Caribbean Queens Festival returns with food, music, dancing, vendors and a Carnival-style parade.

The free, family-friendly festival runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. around Theatre Square, with Broadway closed between 9th and 11th streets. Food vendors will serve Caribbean favorites ranging from Trinidadian doubles and beef patties to jerk shrimp, goat curry and tropical fruit treats, while the Maker Village will feature island-inspired goods and local artists.

Live music, DJs and dance groups will keep things moving throughout the day, and the festival wraps up with a community costume parade. Organizers describe the event as a celebration of the “warmth, rhythm, and flavor of the Caribbean” in downtown Tacoma.

A Tiny Tacoma Park Is Getting a Makeover

A tiny North End park is closing temporarily while Parks Tacoma gives it a $160,000 upgrade.

North Slope Historic Park, at North 8th and North K streets, will get a new climbing structure, slides and covered swings after community input helped shape the project. The park will be fenced off during construction and largely inaccessible to the public, though a small portion of the lawn will remain open.

The project is being paid for with money from a bond measure approved by voters in 2014. Parks Tacoma says the work should be finished by fall, with a celebration planned after completion.

Tacoma a Win Away From the World Series!

Tacoma’s Soundview Little League team kept its season alive Wednesday with an 8-2 win over Oregon in the Northwest Region Tournament in San Bernardino, California, setting up a championship rematch with Idaho on Thursday.

Oregon jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Soundview battled back and pulled away behind a strong performance from Winston Weaver. Weaver pitched four innings with four strikeouts and also tripled home a run as Washington broke the game open.

Now comes the big one: Soundview will face Idaho for the Northwest Region championship at 6:00 PM this evening, with the winner advancing to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania beginning August 19.

Tonight’s game will be broadcast live on ESPN starting at 6:00 PM.
