That Senior Tax Break? It Might Be a Scam
Pierce County is warning homeowners about a social-media scam claiming people born in the 1940s, 1950s or 1960s can get a special property-tax break by requesting a “1098 SR” or “senior tax review form.”
Those forms don’t exist, and there is no federal age-based property-tax program. County officials are urging residents not to provide personal information in response to the bogus claims.
Washington does have a legitimate property-tax exemption program that may help qualifying seniors and homeowners with disabilities. Residents can check eligibility through the Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer’s Office here or call 253-798-6111..
Thai Tea, Pastries & Hainanese Chicken
A new Thai cafe called The Holy Bird is preparing to open in the longtime Fuzion Cafe space at 6820 6th Ave., bringing Hainanese chicken, Thai tea and pastries to Tacoma.
Owners Yu Nanakornphanom and Buoy Ngov previously operated restaurants in Tacoma’s Stadium District and have family ties to Fuzion Cafe. The Holy Bird will focus on khao man gai — poached chicken served with seasoned rice and dipping sauces — along with fresh Thai teas, matcha, coffee and Thai-inspired pastries.
The couple is still finalizing the menu and renovating the space, with a target opening in fall 2026. Other dishes may include fried chicken and kanom jeen nam ya, a Southern Thai noodle dish with fish-based curry.
Tacoma’s Little Leaguers Fight to Stay Alive
The Tacoma Little League team Soundview, which won the Washington State Little League Championship last week, is competing this week in the Northwest Region Tournament in San Bernardino, California. Soundview lost to the Idaho state champions yesterday, 9-3.
They’ll play Oregon today at 12:00 p.m. PDT in a loser-out game. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.
If Soundview wins, they’ll play Idaho again tomorrow, with the winner advancing to the Little League World Series beginning Aug. 19 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
