Beach Bar Is Coming to Tacoma

A new neighborhood cafe and cocktail bar called Kokovoko is preparing to open in Tacoma’s Stadium District later this month.
Kokovoko will take over a space at 102 N. G St., serving coffee and sandwiches during the day before shifting into a craft cocktail bar at night. The menu is also expected to include tacos and other Latin American-inspired street food with Northwest touches.
The name comes from the fictional island of Kokovoko in “Moby-Dick,” and owner Christopher Keil is carrying that idea into an “imaginary beach bar” theme. Keil also operates Proof, the cocktail bar in Old Town Tacoma. An exact opening date hasn’t been announced yet.
Kokovoko’s website can be found here.
A Free Family Night in South Tacoma

Parks Tacoma is bringing a free Summer Bash to STAR Center on Friday, Aug. 21, with an evening of family activities followed by an outdoor showing of “Zootopia 2.”
The fun starts at 6:30 p.m. with games, face painting, food trucks, an obstacle course, bouncy houses and more. Families can also cool off in the sprayground or use the playground while they wait for the movie to begin at dusk.
Bring snacks, blankets and lawn chairs — seating will be on the grass. The event is free and open to the whole family.

Two Parks Advisory Councils Need Members

Parks Tacoma is recruiting new members for two advisory councils that help make recommendations to staff and the Board of Park Commissioners.
The Arts & Heritage Advisory Council is looking for people interested in historic preservation, special events and arts programming. The Active Lifestyles & Community Wellness Advisory Council focuses on areas including sports and fitness, swimming, aquatic programs and other community activities.
Members are appointed by the board and serve in an advisory role. Applications and additional information are available through the Parks Tacoma website.
