Tacoma Police Make an Unusual Rescue

Tacoma police responding to an abandoned boat off Owen Beach got quite a surprise: more than 30 cats and kittens were living inside.
The Police Department’s Marine Services Unit discovered the animals after responding to reports of the abandoned vessel on Thursday, Aug. 6. Officers teamed up with Tacoma Animal Control and forensic technicians to remove the cats and kittens safely. Many were frightened and malnourished, making the rescue a slow and careful process that continued into the following day.
Police said every cat and kitten was being removed from the boat and credited the Marine Services officers, Animal Control officers and forensic technicians who worked together on the unusual rescue.
The Women Behind Tacoma’s Story

Tacoma’s history is filled with women whose work helped shape the city, and a special presentation later this month will bring some of those stories to life.
“She Built Tacoma,” presented by Tacoma History Comes Alive and Lumora Theater, will highlight local entrepreneurs, educators, civic leaders and other trailblazers whose influence can still be felt around the city today.
The presentation is Monday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. at Lumora Theater. Organizers say the evening is designed for anyone interested in Tacoma history, the women who helped build the community, or simply discovering a side of the city’s past they may not know.
A Big Speed Boost for Tacoma Internet

Tacoma internet provider Lightcurve is rolling out internet speeds of up to 8 Gbps in select parts of the city, using the network it leases from Tacoma Public Utilities.
The company, formerly known as Rainier Connect, says the faster service is designed for everything from working at home and gaming to streaming and heavy cloud use. Lightcurve previously offered speeds up to 2 Gbps, so the new tier represents a substantial jump.
The 8-Gig service is currently available only in select Tacoma communities, with wider availability expected over time. Lightcurve says customers should contact the company to check pricing and availability in their neighborhood.
