An 1889 North End home is turning into a giant treasure hunt this weekend. Mary Sudar Appraisals and Estate Sales has filled the historic Geiger House at 912 N. I St. with vintage glassware, furniture, paintings, toys, maps, tools and plenty of other finds collected over generations.

Sudar, a third-generation Tacoman who has been running estate sales for more than 40 years, says she likes staging sales in historic homes where the setting becomes part of the experience. Among the more unusual Tacoma finds she’s encountered over the years: original postcards from the old Tacoma Hotel and a box of MGM studio photographs discovered beneath a schoolteacher’s bed.

This weekend’s sale is by appointment, and Saturday filled quickly, but a few Sunday spots were still available when The News Tribune reported the story. Additional discount-day sales are planned for Aug. 15, 16 and 18.

Tacoma sky watchers have a pretty good reason to stay up late — or get up very early — this week. The Perseid meteor shower, one of the year’s most reliable displays of shooting stars, is heading toward its peak overnight Aug. 12 into the early hours of Aug. 13. Under ideal conditions, the Perseids can produce 50 to 100 meteors an hour.

This year’s timing should be especially good because the moon will be new on Aug. 12, meaning darker skies and less moonlight washing out the show. The best viewing comes during the pre-dawn hours, and getting away from Tacoma’s city lights will improve your chances considerably.

There’s a bonus on Aug. 12, too: six planets — Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Uranus, Saturn and Neptune — will be above the horizon before sunrise. Mars and Saturn should be among the easiest to spot, while Uranus and Neptune will likely require binoculars or a telescope.

After plenty of red tape and work with the city, McMenamins Elks Temple has finally opened its long-awaited Goat Lot patio.

And no, there won’t actually be goats hanging out there. The name goes back to the building’s renovation, when the hillside was covered in blackberry bushes and briars. McMenamins brought in goats to clear the area, and after 11 days of eating their way through the invasive plants, the nickname stuck.

The Goat Lot is open Monday–Thursday from 3–11 p.m., Friday from 3 p.m.–midnight, Saturday from noon–midnight and Sunday from noon–11 p.m.
