Free Bike Fixes Today

Tacoma Mobility is bringing a free bike-friendly pop-up to Northeast Tacoma today.

The Traffic Garden Pop-Up is set for Thursday, August 6, at Northeast Tacoma Playground. The event includes free minor bike repairs, a free lunch, and a chance for kids and families to ride in a low-pressure setting.

Scooters and balance bikes will also be available to borrow for anyone who does not have one. Tacoma Mobility is pitching it as a simple sunny-day outing: bring a bike if you have one, get a small repair if needed, grab lunch, and ride.

Check out the official announcement here.

A Tough Time for Downtown Eats

Downtown Tacoma has lost two restaurants in quick succession.

West 122, located at 728 Pacific Ave., has closed just a year after new owners took over the long-running date-night restaurant. The restaurant had opened in 2023 and was known for dishes such as pork chop, handmade pasta, and local wine, but the owners said high food and labor costs, tight margins, leadership challenges, and lease issues ultimately made it unsustainable.

Nearby, Miró Tapas has also closed after just nine months at 1502 Pacific Ave., in the historic space near the Courtyard by Marriott that once housed Pacific Grill. The Spanish-inspired restaurant offered tapas, paella, seafood dishes, and cocktails, but struggled with execution and consistency after opening last fall. Together, the closures are another reminder of how difficult the restaurant business remains, even in recognizable downtown spaces..

Want a $10 Shade Tree?

Tacoma residents looking to add shade to their yard can get a discounted tree through Pierce Conservation District’s Urban Tree Sale.

The sale is open now through November 7, with a selection of 5- to 7-gallon trees that are more than 6 feet tall available for $10 to $30. The goal is to help residents increase tree canopy, cool homes, and improve local water quality without making the cost a barrier.

Each purchase also includes a free tree-planting workshop, where buyers can learn about the benefits of trees, get step-by-step planting guidance, and receive a watering bucket for deep watering.
