6th Ave Gets Creative

Art on the Ave returns to Tacoma’s 6th Avenue Business District this Sunday, bringing a full day of local art, music, food, vendors, and community activity to one of the city’s best-known corridors.
Presented by TAPCO Credit Union and the 6th Ave Business District, the annual festival brings together artists, makers, musicians, food vendors, small businesses, community organizations, and neighbors. The event stretches along 6th Avenue from Alder to State Street, giving visitors a chance to browse local vendors, catch live entertainment, visit food trucks, and take part in family-friendly activities.
This year’s entertainment includes multiple stages, including the E9 Firehouse Main Stage, the Real Art Tacoma all-ages stage, O’Malley’s Irish Pub stage, and the Rotator Creative Stage. Other activities include a Kids Zone, art exhibits, derby demos, a Native art market, a skateboard mini ramp, circus performances, photo opportunities, and more.

Back on a Bike

Adults who never learned to ride a bike — or who have not been on one in years — have a free chance to build confidence this month.
Tacoma Mobility is offering a free Adult Learn to Ride class on August 12 and 13 at Fern Hill Elementary School, 8442 Park Ave. S. The class is taught by 2nd Cycle instructors and is designed as a supportive, no-pressure environment for adults only.
Participants must bring their own bicycle and helmet. The class is open to adults who want to learn bike basics, practice shifting, try riding again after a long break, or get more comfortable riding with traffic in a supportive group setting.
Rules and registration form here.
Town Wide Electrical Outage Planned

Steilacoom residents are being told to prepare for a planned townwide power outage later this month.
The outage is scheduled for Thursday, August 13, and Friday, August 14, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. According to the town, the outage is needed for proactive maintenance on the local substation, which provides all of Steilacoom’s electrical power.
The Steilacoom Community Center will be open during the outage for anyone who needs electricity, using backup generator power. Officials are urging residents to plan ahead by charging cell phones, unplugging electronics, knowing how to manually open garage doors or electric gates, and keeping refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible.
