Tacoma neighborhoods will have a reason to turn on the porch lights and step outside this evening.

National Night Out takes place each year on the first Tuesday in August, bringing neighbors together for block parties, cookouts, safety events, and casual gatherings aimed at building stronger neighborhoods. The national campaign is designed to strengthen relationships between residents, community groups, and local public safety partners.

It is a simple way to meet neighbors, reconnect with people nearby, and help make the block feel a little more connected before there is ever a problem..

Tacoma Green Drinks is heading to the waterfront this Thursday for an evening with Communities for a Healthy Bay.

The August gathering is set for Thursday, August 6, with Communities for a Healthy Bay hosting at its office overlooking Commencement Bay in Tacoma’s LEED Platinum building. The event gives attendees a chance to hear what the South Sound environmental organization is working on, including its patrol vessel and ongoing efforts to protect local waters.

Communities for a Healthy Bay has worked for more than 30 years to protect and restore Commencement Bay and the waters of the South Sound. Its work includes environmental policy, community education, on-the-water pollution patrols, and holding polluters accountable, all with a focus on clean water and environmental justice.

The event runs from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM and is free. The location is 535 Dock Street, Suite 213.

South Tacoma is getting another boost for safer walking, biking, and transit access.

The City of Tacoma says it has been awarded $2.4 million through the Puget Sound Regional Council’s Transportation Alternatives Program for the South Pine Street Pedestrian, Bike & Transit Access Improvements Project. The work will cover South Pine Street from Center Street to South 47th Street and is part of the larger South Tacoma Sounder Station Access Improvements effort.

The project is expected to add pedestrian, bicycle, and Vision Zero safety improvements, helping connect people who live, work, and visit the Tacoma Mall Regional Growth Center to regional trails and transit. The total project cost is about $21 million, with the city also leveraging Sound Transit dollars for the work..
