Pierce County could see smoky skies over the next few days as wildfire smoke drifts into Western Washington.

The National Weather Service says winds are expected to push smoke from wildfires in Eastern Washington and southern British Columbia into the region beginning Sunday evening and continuing into at least midweek. Air quality is expected to start declining Monday, with smoke potentially getting thicker Tuesday.

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency said air quality could range from moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups on Monday, then from unhealthy for sensitive groups to unhealthy on Tuesday. People with heart or lung conditions, children, older adults, and pregnant people are among those more sensitive to wildfire smoke.

A Tacoma low-cost healthcare provider has closed its women’s health clinic, creating another ripple effect from changes to a local medical residency program.

Community Health Care began notifying affected patients this summer that its Women’s Health Clinic would shut down and that patients would need to seek care elsewhere. The closure follows the end of CHC’s family-medicine residency affiliation with St. Joseph Medical Center, a change that also affected the residency program’s remaining third-year residents.

Program director Carri Jo Timmer told The News Tribune the women’s clinic closure was a direct result of the residency ending and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health declining to help care for patients. CHC says it is working to transfer patients to other OB/GYN offices, but space has been limited. CHC family-medicine doctors will continue seeing low-risk OB patients and delivering babies at St. Joseph.

Tacoma residents who want to spend a few hours outside helping local parks have plenty of chances this month.

Parks Tacoma has a full August calendar of volunteer work parties focused on restoring habitat, removing invasive plants, cleaning up park spaces, and caring for gardens, greenspaces, wetlands, trails, and waterfront areas. Upcoming opportunities include work parties at the Tacoma Nature Center, Titlow Park, Franklin Park, Peck Greenspace, Browns Point Playfield, Oak Tree Park, McKinley Park, Dickman Mill Park, Ursich Park, the Rhododendron Garden, Wapato Park, and more.

Most work parties are hands-on, beginner-friendly ways to help maintain the places Tacoma residents already use and love. Parks Tacoma’s listings include projects such as caring for trails and grounds at the Tacoma Nature Center, restoring bird habitat at Titlow Park, trimming blackberries at Peck Greenspace, and removing invasive plants at Wapato Park.
