It’s Shark Week at Point Defiance

It’s Shark Week, and Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is giving Tacoma a peek behind the glass.

The zoo’s Tropical Reef Aquarium is home to sharks, rays, tropical fish, and coral reef habitat, but the real story is what visitors usually don’t see. Behind the scenes, the aquarium runs on a maze of pipes, filters, tanks, temporary habitats, and life-support systems that keep the warm-water marine environment healthy every day.

Water from Puget Sound is filtered, warmed, treated, and carefully monitored before it ever reaches the animals. So while the sharks may get the spotlight this week, the Tropical Reef is also a story about science, engineering, and the daily behind-the-scenes work that keeps an entire underwater world alive in Tacoma.

Night Market at Chambers

Chambers Bay is giving people a reason to visit after hours — even if they are not playing golf.

The University Place golf course has been hosting pop-up Night Markets this summer, bringing vendors, food, jewelry, handmade goods, and more to the scenic Chambers Bay setting. The next free Pop-Up Night Market for Tuesday, August 5, from 5 to 9 p.m.

The event is part shopping trip, part summer evening outing, with local vendors set up at one of the South Sound’s most recognizable public golf courses. For Tacoma-area families, couples, and anyone looking for a low-key night out, it is a chance to browse, snack, and enjoy the Chambers Bay views without booking a tee time.

Block Party Brews

The Beer Garden is returning to the Downtown Tacoma Block Party this Sunday.

This year’s beer garden will feature beers and drinks from E9 Brewing Company, Tacoma’s first craft brewery. E9 started inside a historic firehouse and now operates from its Brewery District taproom, continuing a Tacoma brewing tradition that stretches back more than 30 years.

The Downtown Tacoma Block Party runs Sunday, August 2, from 1 to 7 p.m. at 9th and Broadway, with local music, art, food, community activities, and the beer garden.

A valid ID is required to enter the beer garden..
