A new family-run café and bakery is planned for Tacoma’s North End, bringing coffee, pastries, and a little new life to the former Dave’s Meat & Produce space.

Rústico Coffee & Bakery is under construction at 1312 N. I St., where owners Diego and Kristin Sierra are renovating the longtime neighborhood building into a warm, all-ages café. Their goal is to create what Kristin described as “a taste of home in the heart of Tacoma,” with in-house seating, front counter service, and a walk-up window.

The menu is expected to include coffee, freshly baked pastries, cookies, croissants, tarts, petite breads, ice cream, and custom cakes, with some Cuban and Honduran family influences mixed in. The café is targeting a fall 2026 opening.

Canoe families will arrive in Tacoma on Thursday as part of the 2026 Paddle to Nisqually Medicine Creek Potlatch.

The Puyallup Tribe of Indians says canoes are expected to begin arriving at dxʷɫalilali around 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, and the community is invited to welcome them to shore. The landing is part of the annual Tribal Canoe Journey, a major intertribal gathering that brings canoe families together through traditional travel by water, cultural protocol, songs, food, and community.

This year’s journey continues toward Nisqually, where the Medicine Creek Potlatch will bring together Indigenous nations from around the Pacific Northwest.

Browns Point has a new Indian restaurant with a wide-ranging menu for dine-in or takeout.

Browns Point Saffron Grill opened in early July at 1000 Town Center NE in Northeast Tacoma, replacing a former teriyaki restaurant. The menu includes familiar starters like pakoras, several breads including naan, paratha, roti, and kulcha, plus Indo-Chinese snacks such as chili chicken and manchurian.

The restaurant also serves tandoori specialties with chicken, lamb, fish, shrimp, paneer, and soya, along with biryani, curries, and a dedicated vegetarian section. Most appetizers run $4 to $14, with main dishes generally $14 to $20. Dessert options include ras malai, gulab jamun, and falooda kulfi. Browns Point Saffron Grill is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
