As summer heats up, Parks Tacoma is reminding visitors to help prevent fires in local parks, beaches, and natural areas.

Even small sparks can become a serious problem during dry weather. Beach bonfires are not allowed in Tacoma parks, including Titlow Park and Owen Beach, and smoking is prohibited in all Tacoma parks. Parks staff also warn that cigarette butts can continue smoldering underground and start root fires long after they are tossed.

Visitors using charcoal grills are responsible for taking hot ashes and coals with them. Ashes should never be dumped on the ground, in trash cans, near trees, around roots, or close to picnic areas. Personal fireworks are also prohibited in Tacoma. A little extra care helps protect Tacoma’s parks, wildlife, neighbors, and staff during fire season..

Drivers near Tacoma, Fife, and the Port of Tacoma should expect overnight lane closures on I-5 and nearby routes this week.

The work begins Monday night and includes lane closures on northbound and southbound I-5 near the Wapato Way East overpass and Porter Way, with crews removing temporary barriers, working on sign brackets, and installing a new guardrail. Some closures will leave only two or three lanes open overnight, so drivers using I-5 late at night or early in the morning should plan for possible delays.

Additional overnight closures are planned on SR 509 between Alexander Avenue East and Taylor Way East, along with a closure on 54th Avenue East between Fourth Street East and Eighth Street East later in the week. WSDOT is asking drivers to use alternate routes when possible and use caution near work zones.

Tacoma Public Library is inviting adults and teens to bring their creativity — and a pair of sneakers — to Moore Library this Saturday.

The library will host a DIY sneaker customization workshop on Saturday, August 1, at noon. Participants will learn the basics of turning plain leather or faux leather sneakers into personalized wearable art, including design planning, prep work, painting techniques, brush use, and working with professional leather paints.

No prior experience is needed. Participants should bring a clean pair of leather or faux leather sneakers and be ready to experiment with their own design. The workshop is aimed at adults and teens looking for a hands-on creative project that is a little different from the usual Saturday outing.
